Bikini

Namensgebend für den Bikini war das Bikini-Atoll, ein Territorium der Marshallinseln. 1946 warf eine US-amerikanisches Flugzeug über dem Bikini-Atoll die erste Atombombe der Nachkriegszeit ab und leitete damit eine Testserie von Wasserstoff- und Atom-Bombenexplosionen ein. Louis Réard wählte darauf hin Bikini als Marketing-Produktnamen und stellte das Bikini-Oberteil für Bademoden wenige Tage nach dem ersten Atomtest in Paris vor. Er sollte der zeitgenössischen Käuferschicht zur positiven Identifizierung dienen: Der Bikini war exotisch – wie das Südsee-Atoll – und eine revolutionäre Veränderung der Kleiderordnung. Atomtests wurden damals noch als fortschrittlich und aufregend bewertet. Die negativen Spätfolgen kamen erst in den 1970er Jahren ins öffentliche Bewusstsein, als die bleibende Verseuchung des Atolls bekannt wurde und immer mehr Menschen an Krebs erkrankten.

Louis Réard created the competing two-piece swimsuit design, which he called the bikini. He noticed that women at the beach rolled up the edges of their swimsuit bottoms and tops to improve their tan. On 5 July, Réard introduced his design at a swimsuit review held at a popular Paris public pool, Piscine Molitor, four days after the first test of an American nuclear weapon at the Bikini Atoll. The newspapers were full of news about it and Reard hoped for the same with his design. Réard's bikini undercut Heim's atome in its brevity. His design consisted of a two triangles of fabric forming a bra, and two triangular pieces of fabric covering the mons pubis and the buttocks connected by string. He announced that his swimsuit was smaller than the world's smallest bathing suit. Réard said that “like the bomb, the bikini is small and devastating”. Fashion writer Diana Vreeland described the bikini as the “atom bomb of fashion”.

Cuando Louis Reard quiso presentarlo en la piscina del hotel Melitor, se encontró con el inconveniente de que ninguna modelo profesional se atrevía a lucirlo en público, teniendo que recurrir finalmente a Micheline Bernardini (estríper del Casino de París), quien le advirtió que el desfile previsto para el 5 de abril de 1946 iba a ser una bomba más potente que la que, cinco días antes, el Gobierno de Estados Unidos había detonado en el atolón de Bikini. El escandaloso traje de baño de dos piezas no acabó de popularizarse hasta 1960: Brigitte Bardot, icono de la moda y símbolo sexual de los años cincuenta y sesenta, se exhibe con él ante los fotógrafos en las playas de Cannes y Saint-Tropez; Marilyn Monroe, Jane Fonda… Brian Hyland despierta con su tema Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini de 1960 el gusto entre las adolescentes estadounidenses por una prenda que, verano a verano, evolucionará hasta alcanzar su mínima expresión — el microkini — ya a mediados de los años noventa.

Louis Réard, qui tient la boutique de lingerie de sa mère près des Folies Bergère et qui a constaté que les femmes baissent leur maillot de bain pour mieux bronzer, invente le bikini – 1qm de tissu constitué d'un bandeau pour le haut et de deux triangles inversés pour le bas si bien que le nombril est dévoilé pour la toute première fois – et le présente pour la première fois à Paris, le 5 juillet 1946, à la piscine Molitor porté par Micheline Bernardini, une danseuse nue bien connue du Casino de Paris – aucune mannequin ne voulant le porter. Il déclare avoir choisi le nom de « Bikini » en référence à l'atoll du même nom aux Îles Marshall, sur lequel, cinq jours auparavant, a eu lieu une explosion nucléaire. Il espère que l'effet de mode de ce nouveau produit sera comparable à celui de l'explosion qui vient d'avoir lieu.
